Friday Facts! here on the Knowledge Safari blog is when we shine the spotlight on various areas of special needs. For instance, we have blogged about: Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Neuroblastoma and Pompe Disease.

There are so many areas to choose from and we would like to know: Which area of special needs do you think needs some awareness? Let us know and we will highlight it soon!

Check back next Friday to see which one we are highlighting first!

Have a great weekend.

I think septo optic dysplasia (SOD) and optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH) needs a highlight. just a quick fact sheet... ONH is the leading cause of childhood blindness. And (I believe) 70% of kids with ONH has traits of SOD; hormone deficiency, malformations in the corpus collosum or septum pellucidum, which can be extremely detrimental to overall health and development if left undiagnosed and untreated. www.jumpingwaves.com

I have a friend who lost her only 3 children to Polycystic Kidney Disease - It would be great if you could showcase this. Sensory Processing Disorder is also very near and dear to my heart...

Here is a big woo-hoo for metabolic disorders - those that are tested for by most states with the infant heel stick test. PKU is the most well known, my daughter has MCADD and the list goes on and on. Most kids have been tested for some but screening was only recently expanded in most states, and failure to diagnose such disorders can result in death and disability.
